Choosing a College
This article assumes that you already know how to find what courses a school has. It is not directly based on academics. This article is focused mostly on the social aspects of college. Find the colleges with the major you want, and then narrow them down with the following questions:
1) How close is it?Unless you either a) Really do want to live at home or a) Really hate your parents, your best bet is to probably follow this rule for location.
Put down a map of your state/region. Mark where you live, and mark where your prospective colleges are. Now, draw a 90 mile radius around your house. The closer colleges are to that radius, the better, because 90 miles away is the perfect number. It’s too far away to commute, and it’s close enough to come home when you feel like it. Sure, you might think it would be cool to go to school cross-country - until you have to buy a plane ticket home.
2) Will I be accepted by the community?
It is always important to understand the environment you are heading into. Contrary to belief, there are schools that may have a problem with your drinking, mooching, and harrassing of women. First, use common sense. If you are African American, you probably do not want to go to a College in the Deep South, as you might find yourself hung. If you are a player, you probably don’t want to go to a highly feminist school, such as Berkeley, as you might find yourself getting sued after a bad date. If you are a hermit, you probably don want to go to a college that parties all the time, such as UCLA. If you are shy, you probably don want to go to a college that has 80,000 attendants, such as NYU. You get the idea. Go to the college before signing up. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
3) How Good of a Name Does the College Have?
I’ll tell you right now, when you apply for a job after college, they will never look at your grades. What counts is that you: a) passed and b) attended a college they know. Hence, it is better to Graduate with a 2.0 at an Ivy League than a 4.0 at a State/Community College, because an student gets the exact same diploma as the C student.
4) How Do I Get Ready So I Get Accepted.
First, have good grades. But besides grades, you also want to be in a lot of activities. Most schools have clubs that have meetings once every two months - join a bunch of those - they look great on applications. Anything with a smart sounding name (even if you don’t do crap): Spanish club, Current Events Club, Environmental Club, Multi-cultural Awareness Club etc. They have fancy names for a reason, you know!
Oh, and another important thing, especially since its on this site: DON’T GET CAUGHT CHEATING. many colleges will ask the high school if the student is trustworthy, because they are not legally allowed to ask if they’ve been caught cheating. You do NOT want the answer to that question to be “no”, because then you are pretty much blacklisted from most colleges. If you’ve already been caught, my advice to you is to be REAL friendly with your faculty.
Well, thats all I’ve got for now. Happy Hunting!
