Everyone is intrigued by famous and successful people. The autobiographies and biographies of famous people are read and enjoyed by almost everyone.
Some people are even interested in finding out the eating habits and favourite pets of their heroes. However, if given a chance to directly ask a question from a famous person most people will ask a serious and thought-provoking question.
If I am given such a chance, I would like to ask Ms. Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, what were the reasons behind her terrible failure in Office.I have several reasons to ask this question, and I will discuss them in the following paragraphs.
In the elections of 1988 in Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto’s Political Party won majority of the setas in the assembly. She was chosen as the Prime Minister. To me, she was a heroine, an Oxford Graduate, a strong advocate of democratic principles, young,energetic, and determined to get rid of all the problems that the nation was facing.
She seemed to be the answer to the prayers of all the suppressed and deprived people of the country, who had endured military rule for the last eleven years!!!!!! She took a good start. I still remember her First Official Speech. She was so straight forward and bold in her approach. She really looked like the “Daughter of East”, the title of her autobiography. She promised Food, Cloth and Shelter for all. Majority of the people were happy and determined to strengthen her government.
It was after a few months that the flaws started to come out. She failed to pass any laws that would protect and provide rights to women in Pakistan, for example, proper representation in the National Assembly, laws to eliminate domestic violence, etc.
There were troubles in her Party as well. many? workers and Old, Experinced collegues were dissatisfied with her way of favouring blood relatives more than the deserving party workers.
People were also amazed that she bore two of her children while in Office. There was no such example in all over the world!!! How could she compromise on her time when there was so much to be done in the country.However. the main thing that caused a wave of anger in the country was the constant interfering of her husband in political affairs and his involvement in lots of corruption cases. Benazir did nothing to stop him, instead, she covered him but he was proved guilty after all.
In less than twenty two months she lost in the no-confidence movement in the Assembly.I also remember herlosing the re-election .I now see her as an exiled person facing corruption charges.That is why I would like to ask her why did she deviate from the right course? She could have done a lot of good for her nation as she had the neccessary skills and vision. Then why? Why did she let this damage happen to herself and to her people? I know the answer would fill a big void in the history of Pakistan that why did someone as promising as Benazir failed?
